PURE HEART: Traditional Art Reimagined through the Story of Simcheong

The Korean literary classic Simcheongjeon is reborn in a new light, infused with the beauty of traditional Korean aesthetics.
The Korean folktale Simcheong, rooted in the tradition of pansori, tells the story of a devoted daughter, Simcheong, who casts herself into the Indangsu Sea to restore the sight of her blind father, Sim Bongsa (Sim the Blind).
Fifteen-year-old Simcheong, who lost her mother at a young age, offers herself in exchange for 300 seoks of rice (about 43,200 kg) to dedicate to Buddha in hopes of restoring her blind father’s sight. She then casts herself into the Indangsu Sea and perishes, only to be miraculously reborn, ascend as an empress, and ultimately reunite with her father.

In PURE HEART, Simcheong’s story is retold through her own eyes, set against a backdrop where the shadow of inner conflict and the glimmers of light converge. It presents a visually striking performance by blending a fantasy world brought to life through vibrant visuals that fill the stage with costumes based on traditional Korean attire, each intricately interpreted to reflect the mood and stage composition of each act.

    Synopsis
The audience is introduced to the solitary figure of Simcheong standing alone upon a white stage. As if wrestling with her inner turmoil, she closes her eyes in silence. As she struggles to come to terms with the sacrifice she is about to make, the conflict inside her rages ever more intensely, and the tension is amplified by the arrival of Sim Bongsa (her Father) and Bbaengdeok(her stepmother).
Finally, Simcheong reaches the edge of the ship’s bow. As she gathers her resolve and leaps into the dark, blue depths, an otherworldly realm unfolds before her.
