JIJI, guitar
JIJI is a guitarist acclaimed for her expressive range, technical command, and adventurous programming across acoustic and electric guitars. Praised by The Washington Post as “mesmerizing” and “stirring,” her performances span classical repertoire, contemporary works, and free improvisation. In 2021, The Washington Post named her one of “21 composers/performers who sound like tomorrow.”
She has appeared at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall, Lincoln Center, 92Y, Caramoor, the National Gallery of Art, and more, with features on PBS, NPR, FOX-TV, and Hong Kong’s RTHK. In 2016, she became the first guitarist in 30 years to win First Prize at the Concert Artists Guild Competition.
JIJI has premiered works by composers including Steven Mackey, David Lang, Michael Gilbertson, Natalie Dietterich, Hilary Purrington, and Paul Lansky. Her 2024 album UNBOUND features commissioned works. Recent chamber appearances include the New York Philharmonic’s Nightcap series, Cuarteto Latinoamericano, the Verona Quartet, and violinist Danbi Um. In the 2023?24 season, she debuted at Verizon Hall with the Curtis Symphony Orchestra, premiering a new concerto by Steven Mackey.
As a concerto soloist, she has performed with the American Composers Orchestra, Kansas City Symphony, Rochester Philharmonic, New West Symphony, and more. She is especially noted for her interpretations of Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez and has premiered four major concertos in the past five years.
A committed educator, JIJI is Associate Professor of Guitar at Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music and has given master classes at Yale, Peabody, and Dublin’s National Concert Hall.
She also composes and performs her own works, and in 2024 released an EP in collaboration with R&B artist Daniel Fears. She is represented by Kirshbaum Associates and sponsored by Augustine Strings and GuitarLift.
