THEATRE
HAN Tae-sook <Electra>

“HAN Tae-sook, master of psychodrama.” Newsis, from a review of <1984>

“HAN Tae-sook has reclaimed contemporaneity by transcending the limits of time and space.” Newstage, from a review of <The Glass Menagerie>

Original play by: Sophocles
Adapted by: KO Yeon-ock
Directed by: HAN Tae-sook
Starring: JANG Young-nam, SEO Yi-suk, PARK Wan-kyu, PAIK Seong-chul, PARK Soo-jin and etc.

One of the most important directors of our time, HAN Tae-sook has persistently and delicately delved into the internal psychology of humans, establishing a singular aesthetic of her own. Stretching from Greek classics such as <Oedipus> and <Antigone>, quintessential masterpieces of English theater like <Macbeth>, <Richard III>, <Death of a Salesman>, <The Glass Managerie>, to philosophical literatures like <Dante’s Divine Comedy> and <1984>, HAN’s artistic oeuvre is spread over a wide spectrum. She has always proven her reputation and credibility through works characterized by psychological insight piercing into human nature, clear construction of characters, and a stage filled with symbolism. Her works are known for their perfect balance of theatrical tension, joy, and thematic essence. Since her <Iago and Othello> in 2006, HAN will return to the stage of LG Art Center in 12 years, with a new creation.

This time, she has chosen the Greek classic <Electra>. Considered as the final piece of Sophocles’ three tragedies, <Electra> is a tragic tale of Electra and the vengeance she asks her brother to take on her mother Clytemnestra and her lover Aegisthus for the murder of her father, Agamemnon. The work was revisited not only by Sophocles’ contemporaries like Aeschylus and Euripides but also by modern playwrights like Eugene O’Neill. The work was also created into multiple films and operas, proving to be an inspiration for many artists. <Electra> raises the question that has lived with the human race for thousands of years; ‘can vengeance be justified,’ and ‘what is justice?’
Most notable in HAN’s <Electra> is the variation of Electra, transformed into a female guerrilla warrior carrying out her vengeance set in a bunker. This adaptation was made by KOH Yeon-ok, a playwright named “the alchemist of crime thrillers.” The two spines of the conflict, Electra and Clytemnestra, will be played by JANG Young-nam and SEO Yi-suk respectively, both brilliant actresses returning to the stage after a long absence. Credible actors like PARK Wan-kyu who have established a firm character in both tragedies and comedies will add depth and quality to the work.
