The large-scale fortress, designed by the Joseon Dynasty scholar Jeong Yak-yong. It is considered one of the hallmarks of civil architecture for its excellent scientific techniques and Eastern and Western architectural techniques. It was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in recognition of its historical significance. The fortress encircles a large portion of downtown Suwon, allowing visitors to see its harmonious scene with modernity while also experiencing a sense of historical continuity, as the architecture, including Janganmun Gate and Paldalmun Gate, is still well preserved. Various attractive features around the fortress wall draw visitors for a stroll at all hours of the day and night.
